Not long after my migraines became chronic, I began to notice that smoking a small amount of cannabis would make my head feel better. It felt soothing in a way, and protective, like putting bandages over bruised brain. I began to notice during headaches how even a small amount would mask my pain, or dull it enough to make me more comfortable. When I medicated, I was able to carry on with my night. It was the difference between laying in bed a grumpy mess, unable to do simple chores – and being able to do laundry or even have a guest over at the house. At times I was even able to go out and attend some evening plans with friends because the cannabis made me feel able somehow. It improved my mood, lessened my pain, and even increased the level of volume I could tolerate – thereby making it easier to join birthday parties at loud bars and sometimes even a concert. It just let me get on with my life.
Once I became a legal medical patient, my cannabis doctor urged me to invest in a vaporizer. It was great advice. Smoking is not the best way to ingest your cannabis, and I haven’t gone back to joints, bongs or pipes since. No more awkwardly rolling joints in a hurry, no more smelling like roaches, no more coughing and now I get to save my vaped bud for edibles!
Where am I now? I am currently 6 years in to my chronic illness… Cannabis is a helpful tool. It has helped me overcome the vicious cycle of rebound migraines, and has given me an alternative to addictive narcotics. But it is not a cure. It was a migraine specific elimination diet that cut my migraines by more than half. I highly recommend reading the book Heal Your Headache by Dr. David Buchholz. I still get migraines but I treat each one as an opportunity to test out a new strain, edible, oil some combination of these.

In this crazy world we live in, where we are constantly losing hope in our society and ourselves, I’d like to just take this opportunity to thank @MigraineBuds for being the most selfless person I have ever met in my entire life. Not only have you gone out of your way for me so many times with no questions asked, now you’ve gifted me with this wonderful piece of literature to further help me in my battle with my migraines. You are such a wonderful human and I’m so happy that I’ve got the chance to know you.

I’ve been 23 days without a migraine and I owe it all to medical marijuana…longest stretch for me in at least 8 years! I came off all big pharm drugs a year ago…very rough year of migraines and vomiting…But I’m enjoying every minute I’m pain free! I tried everything i could…thank god for my marijuana!

I am newish to marijuana for pain but not new to migraines. I’m 30 and I’ve had them since I was about 6, they’ve varied over the years in intensity and frequency but I’d pretty much exhausted medication options that were effective. I started getting botox, which definitely helps but doesn’t eliminate, and using CBD in conjunction with a medication cocktail, which I noted helped immensely. So we decided to go the legal route of getting me a card and it has been life changing! A few puffs of sativa brings me down to 0 in a matter of minutes and I’m sleeping so much better using indica at night. Still new to this but very hopeful!

I take oil 2 to 3 times a day as preventive. It has helped me with more than just my chronic pain. My mood is better and level (less mood swings), my OCD is more manageable, my ADHD is under control, I hardly notice the arthritis in my knees, I could go on. Give it a good two week try, and take small amounts about the size of a grain of rice. I definitely notice when I don’t take it.

I started using cannabis for Crohn’s about 3 years ago. In my state is was illegal so I could only get indica. I use a vaporizer. It has helped tremendously. After I vaporize I make edibles from the cannabis. About 2 years ago I started getting chronic migraine. Indica made migraines worse. Last year I went on vacation to Colorado and tried Sativa edibles. Immediately, the migraines went away with the Sativa. In addition, I didn’t get the munchies or feel over tired.

I love this group! I’m in tears from reading some of your success stories! It’s so nice to hear hopeful things. I can’t wait to learn more about CBD, what I should buy and how to make my own edibles.

I am currently vaping “100% pure” CBD oil (from hemp plants) – meaning no THC – What I can tell you about it in the short time I’ve used it is that I’ve been able to discontinue my anxiety and antidepressant meds. Now, I know this doesn’t exactly relate to migraines for everyone, but for me, it does because I have massive social anxiety related to my migraine syndrome.
